Hi. My Name is Laura. I have been touched deeply by Incompetent Cervix. I lost twins 9 years ago to IC. At the time there was no explanation. I found a million reasons why it was my fault that my babies died. It would be over 7 years before I learned the truth.
Four years later, my husband and I decided we were ready to aggressively try to conceive. We began fertility treatments in October of 2000. In December of 2003 I got pregnant with my son, Jamie. In the years between, I had experienced 6 first trimester miscarriages. I was scared. I had good reason to be. I had no idea at the time, but I have an incompetent cervix.
I had a significant amount of bleeding during my pregnancy that kept me on and off bed rest during first 20 weeks of my pregnancy. At nearly 24 weeks, I was just beginning to gain some confidence in my pregnancy. I learned I was having a boy. I was very well monitored. All the monitoring in the world could not predict that my cervix was about to give out. At 24 weeks, I fainted at work. I went to the doctor where it was discovered that I was 3cm dilated with bulging membranes. By the time I reached the hospital for a rescue cerclage, I was 4cm dilated. I got my rescue cerclage in time, but just barely. The procedure was a success. The short of it is that I went on bed rest and carried my son to 36 weeks. This is a very abbreviated version of events.
I thank God that I had well educated and aggressive doctors. Many women are not this fortunate. I knew very little about IC even after being diagnosed with it myself. When I discovered how many people had lost their babies due to this condition, I knew I had to do something. That's when my partner, Viv, and I came up with the idea for our website, www.fightic.com. We created this message board in conjunction with that. We want to promote education and research about IC. No mother should have to say goodbye to her baby.
