Hi, My name is Sandra (I followed the link from the pcos site Thanks!) Some of you may also recognize me from the msn group. Here is my story a little long sorry!
Ten years ago, on November 6, 1993, my husband and I got married and started ttc immediately. After several years of no success, we went to a fertility specialist who ran some tests and put me on 150mg of clomid. In march of 96, I tested positive for pregnancy #1. At 13 wks, I found out my baby had passed away at approximately 8wks. It was classified as an unexplained miscarriage. Due to insurance issues, we stopped using the meds but continued ttc on our own for the next few years In 2000 we started seeing a regular obgyn to get a refferral to see a specialist, but he assured us we didn't need one. He diagnosed me with pcos and started me on clomid 150mg. in March of 01, I tested positive for pg #2, that one ended a few wks later-diagnosis: blighted ovum. On 9/11, I had my first OB visit for pg #3-that pregnancy also ended a few wks later-diagnosis another blighted ovum. We decided one more time and in dec of 01, I tested pos for preg #4. In early January of 02, I found out I was carrying twins. We were excited and terrified at the same time. Everthing was going great until about 18wks into my pregnancy when I started having a lot of lower back pain and heavy discharge. A few days later, I went to the restroom and felt a huge lump sticking out. We later found out it was the bag of waters bulging out. It was too late. I gave birth to my angel's, Joshua and Sarah. They lived for about an hour. We were devastated. How could this have happened to us? Now there was something new to add to my list of reasons for my mc's. It was explained to us that I had an incompetent cervix and what would have to be done for any future pregnancies.
At any rate we let ourselves grieve and started ttc a few months later. Talk about being a glutton for punishment!! (We started ttc again in June of 02-we lost the twins in march of 02) I wasn't concieving. We did the clomid- that had seemed to work for all the other pregnancies. We used the fertility monitor, too but nothing was working. We started loosing hope. My job was very depressing to me because everyone around me was pregnant, so I got a new job. I started not feeling too well and found out I was a type II diabetic in late January of 03. I was told to stop ttc right away. My sugar levels were dangerously high, and that my levels indicated that I had been diabetic for years and it was never diagnosed, a major reason for all my losses. I had too control my sugar and should wait at least 6 months to a year.
Two months later, right around the anniversary of the birth/death of my twins, I started getting that funny feeling. I kept telling myself "No, it's in my head. There is no way that I'm pregnant. I'm not even TTC!" Sure enough, I WAS PG! Was this a joke or something after trying for 10 yrs, most of which were on fertility meds, now this?!
We called our doctor immediately to confirm the pregnancy and at around six weeks into the pregnancy, I found out I was pregnant again with twins! My Dr. took all the precautions. I was off work at 7 wks and put on insulin right away. At 14wks, I was scheduled for my cerclage. I went into the hospital and had a spinal (the worst part was the shot given to me to numb my back before the insertion of the catheter and that the numbness in my legs stayed with me for more that eight hours!)
I had monthly u/s's until my 29th week and weekly thereafter, though only for a short time. I went into labor at 32 1/2 wks into my pregnancy and on November 6th 2003, on our ten year anniversary, I gave birth to Christian and Sophia! It was wonderful!!!!! For being 8 wks early, they were born at good weights. Sophia, 4lbs 2oz and Christian, 6lbs 4oz! He was a big one for being 2 months premature! They stayed in the NICU for about a month.
I couldn't understand why we had to suffer the way we did, that after 10 yrs of TTC, mostly with the use of drugs, I got pregnant naturally and had these wonderful babies. Now we know that God has a plan for everyone! We don't question anything anymore, we just go with the flow. This is our story! Although lots of emotions were withheld, because it was already long enough. We are greatful everyday for the advances in medical care. I am greatful for the cerclage!
