hi this is soya, I am happy to announce my pregnancy (5th) after one loss to ic at 23.3wks and three m/c's. I am 9wks 5 days along....I have three more days of work left before I go on leave.Seeing my ob at 11weeks to arrange the cerclage.......very worried about complications and effectiveness of the cerclage.....I have no choice....the alternative is unthinkable. I don't want to go through that again.....it is still so painful. I started loosing my mucous plug the first time at 19 weeks and my cervix was short on the 20 wk u/s.....they could have tried a cerclage then.....I am still so angry.....over 2 years ago now. Any words of encouragement and successs stories would help lots... Julie in Ottawa canada.

Julie, Firstly I am so sorry for all of your losses. At the same time congratulations on your current pregnancy. I can relate to lots of what you're feeling- anger over the loss of your baby to IC, fear of the cerclage and fear of another loss. The good news is that preventive cerclages are overwhelmingly successful and that vast majority of women with them go on to have healthy babies. The procedure itself wasn't as terrible as I thought it might be, very very manageable, really. So far, for me, this pregnancy has been full of lots of worry and anxiety but I think that's par for the course with IC. Some women manage to be really "zen" about it, I wish i could but that's just me. We lost our daughter, Caroline, last summer at 20 weeks, 3 days. I'm currently 21 weeks, 2 days with twins! Honestly at the start of this pregnancy I never thought I'd make it this far, but here I am with my cerclage, and on modified bedrest, and viability is in sight! My only advice is this: I would ask your OB for a referral to a perinatalogist as well. I'm in Calgary and am being followed by both, and it's reassuring to be watched so closely. Take good care, Kelly-Ann

I can only share preventative cerclage success stories because out of all the women I have, I haven't met any that had a failed preventative cerclage or any major complications. I know there must be cases of failed prev. cerclages, but honestly I haven't found them. I've found so very many stories of success, even to the point of many ladies having to be induced in the end. Can you imagine being at that point right now?!
I haven't had the pleasure of having a preventative cerclage yet. As you know, mine was a rescue. I am mad that so many doctors will not at least attempt the procedure, like in your case. Our babies are worth fighting for. I don't blame you for being angry. The medical community is far too divided and/or uneducated about how to treat IC, or even if it should be treated. I thank God every day for the wonderful doctor who got me the help I needed when I didn't know what to fight for. I would have blindly done whatever they told me to do, including deliver my son at 24 weeks. We put our faith in our doctors because they are supposed to be the ones who fight for our lives and the lives of our children. We count on their knowledge. When they lack the education needed, lives can and will be lost. It's even worse when they have the knowledge and just aren't willing to try.
Congatulations on your pregnancy. I have a lot of faith in preventative cerlcages and I'm so very, very happy that you will have one. This pregnancy is going to be frightening and wonderful at the same time. People who have been through this have lost the blind innocence and we can never get it back.

((Julie)). You're going to worry all the way through this pregnancy. It might help you to read some success stories. Look in my siggie - that's my cerclage baby!
I still miss his big brother everyday, but I'm so thankful for this miracle.

I rented my dopplar from www.heartbeatsathome.com b/c they were the most affordable. The fetal dopplar did help sometimes, but be careful not to freak out when it's difficult to find the heartbeat. Sometimes it takes a lot of patience, especially in the earlier months.
