When I fell pregnant I was petrified I had lost 2 babies to IC and was almost certain that I was going to lose this one. Thankfully in between IVF cycles I had search out specialist and had a consultation with one that told me all I needed to know in re to prev pregnancy's and what went wrong and what we were going to do. This obst only took on 4 patients (high risk) a month, so he was at my call when I started to panic..which I did alot of.
I rang his office at 4 weeks (IVF) and let them know I was pregnant, to my shock he didn't want to see me till 10 weeks. But was kept on progesterone pessaries to 13 weeks. At 13 weeks I was admitted with a cervix of 3.8cm and was sutured. From there I was on bed rest for the next 2 weeks till the ultrasound showed that it was in a favorable spot..tucked up high in the cervix. I had ultrasounds every week and saw obst fortnightly. I was told not to carry anything with weight including shopping bags and not to be on my feet alot. And defiantly no bding or any intimate relations at all.
My cervix varied in size over the 8 months one week it was 4.5 the next 3.2 but it never went below 3. If this was to occur my obst was admitting me to hospital bed rest with the option of steroids. At 30 weeks I couldn't believe I had come so far, I had started maternity leave at 13 weeks and really hadn't been doing alot for the whole pregnancy. So on a Sunday night I was in the toilet and wiped only to find blood, I freaked and thought this can't happen yet. I rang my obst who told me to drive to the hospital 1hr and 1\2 away. I had a hemorrhage but bubs was OK, I was kept for observation and went home confident. We as a couple decided that because my obst sutured was so high they have to give an epidural to get it out that we would do the whole lot in one go. So on the morning 10 March 2005 my daughter Eliza was born at 37.5 weeks due to GD, I was in total shock as delivering a healthy babe was a new experience, it took a few hours for the whole thing to sink in.
I have every confidence in this obst, he changed my life and I am eternally grateful. Advice to others..go with your gut feelings 2 times before I didn't feel right so much that I had rang the obst office to be seen but they were always busy. Insist it is important, don't dismiss mucous discharge and don't let them convince you that a good cervical length is 2cm.
