DH and had been married for nine years and ttc the entire time when we found out we were about six weeks pregnant in Oct 05. They were monitoring me for IC the whole pregnancy because I had a LEAP procedure about 7 years earlier. Things were fine at first, then I started having issues with bleeding. At first they thought is was normal bleeding from having sex or cervical exams. It kept up and I was finally diagnosed with a placenta previa at about 14 weeks. So then I was placed on pelvic rest for about 10 weeks while they monitored the situation. My placenta moved up in my utereus and I was taken off pelvic rest.
At around 24 weeks I started noticing a weird yellowish brown discharge. I went into the DR office but they were really overwhelmed due to a couple of patients going into preterm labor so I only saw the nurse midwife. She diagnosed a yeast infection. I complained to her of a tightened feeling in my tummy, but she told me it was normal. In the meantime DH and I finally got up the nerve to have sex again after being on pelvic rest for so long.
When I went back in for my regular check up at 26 weeks I told my regular Doc I was still having the discharge. She did a pelvic exam and told me that my cervix was too soft for her liking and sent me upstairs for an u/s. She asked if I had been having contractions, and I again explained the tightened feeling in my tummy, she said that was indeed contractions. While I was waiting for the u/s tech they hooked me up to the contraction monitor. I called my mom and had her come over to sit with me while we waited. The u/s tech was finally freed up about a half hour later and Mom and I went in to see what was up. She took a quick look at me, found the babies heartbeat, then told me to wait there while she went to get the doctor.
The doctor came in and took one look at me and said I was completely effaced, my amniotic sac was bulging down into the cervix and that I was going to the hospital immediately due to IC. I asked about an emergency cerclage but was told that it was too late. I drove myself around the corner to the hospital and sent my mom to get DH (we have only one car and DH doesn't drive). I got myself registered, and about that time DH showed up with mom. His first words to me were No More Sex until we have this baby. He was convinced he had done something to start this.
When we got upstairs to L/D I began having contractions. They put me on magnesium sulfate and my Doc called a larger university hospital to see about getting me admited up there as my local hospital isn't equiped to deal with babies under 36 weeks. They didn't want me yet because the magnesium sulfate seemed to be working okay. I spent the night in the hospital and by the following morning was having contractions that were so intense I had to breathe through them. My Doc came in saw how much pain I was in and said, thats it your going to take the ambulance up to Syracuse.
We arrived in Syracuse about two hours later. The resident came in to examine me and I was about 1-2 cm dialated. They upped my magnesium to the highest level possible and put me in the feet up head down position. I was having horrible back pain, but they wouldn't give me any meds. I think they were afraid I was having back labor. They gave me two shots of steriods to develop the babies lungs. I had a ton of ultra sounds and found out DD weighed about 2 lbs 12 zo. I stayed on the magnesium for two weeks, and in the transdelinburg position for 5-7 days. My contractions finally stopped and my cervix closed back down, but I remained fully effaced. The entire time I was there the residents kept telling my I would be having the baby soon. They finally let me go down to the antepartum wing where they took me off the magesium and let me rest in a normal postion. After another five days they decided to let me go home, but I had to remain on bedrest and couldn't get up except to go to the bathroom. And no going out except for my weekly checkups at the perinatal center in Syracuse.
At around 34 weeks I started to lose my mucus plug, and began having bouts of contractions which I managed to stop by drinking lots of water. At 36 weeks I was released to go back to my regular doctors office. I was released on a Friday and I went into labor at 2:30 in the morning that Sunday. I spent 15 1/2 hours in labor before I got my epidural (they were really busy and I was doing fine with just a shot to take the edge off). After I got the epidural they noticed I had developed a fever. They put me on pitocin to get my contractions regulated as they seemed to be slowing down. Then the nurse noticed that the babies heartrate was dropping after each contraction. She called my doc and they stopped the pitocin. The doc came in and took a look at the monitoring strips. She told me we had to have an immediate c-section because there was some sort of problem with the placenta.
We were in the surgical room about a 1/2 hr later ready to go. The baby had mananged to get herself stuck in my pelvis so it took three of them to pull her out. She needed just a tiny amount of oxygen at first. She weighed 6 lbs 12 oz, and was perfect other than a tiny bit of jaundice. After she was born, we found out I had an infection in my amniotic fluid.
I hope my story of IC can bring hope to some of you. If you have any misgivings about your treatment, make sure you speak up to your doctor and be an advocate for yourself! Good luck to you all, my thoughts prayers are wilth you.
