I had IC I have had a m/c at 6 weeks and another at 7 weeks back in 2002. I didn't get pregnant again until Feb of 2006. At 16 weeks I went to the doctor and told them I thought I had lost my mucos plug. They said probably not and didn't even do a u/s that day. I had been going a lot to the doc for unexplained bleeding about every week or two. Anyway 6 days after thinking I had lost my plug I starting having contractions went to the doc was dialated 3 or 4 cent with bluging membrane. He put me in the hosital with slight elevation with no restrictions on getting up. I only did to use the bathroom. The next morning I was 5 cent and lost our little girl. I was wandering what type of doctor you use. I was also wandering if you have pre term labor is that the cause of the cervix opening or is it that when you have IC you open and then start having the contractions? After reading your story I am furious with the doctor. I think they could have done more if they would have just listened to me.

Tami, I am furious when I read stories like yours as well. That's a lot of what our website is about. We've got to get widespread education, not just to pregnant women, but to the OB's and Peri's. It doesn't matter which kind of doctor you have, your story seems to be the norm. Many women have lost the battle of trying to demand a cerclage because their Peri's were the "best in the state", or "top of their field". What did I have? Just a regular OB who changed the course of my life in a matter of seconds. The ambulance was on it's way to take me to one hospital to go to L&D. My doctor happened to stop in and say "Wait a minute, I think there's a doctor that may help." When the ambulance got there they had him take me somewhere else. Just chance, luck, a doctor who thought about something that 4 other doctors in the same office didn't think of.
I really didn't have much in the way of contractions until after I was dilated. That's what IC is. The hard thing is that if you go into labor, it is difficult to determine if you dilated due to pre term labor or IC. Many women lose multiple babies before they are officially diagnosed and that makes me sick.
I'm so very sorry for your loss. I don't know any great words of comfort. The most important thing you can do is find a doctor who understands incompetent cervix and who will give you a preventative cerclage in future pregnancies. There's a short list of questions to ask your doctor on the website.

Do you have PCOS and did you take any progestrone during your preg. I just saw on your website the info about PCOS. I have it was diagnosed in 97. Tried clomid and then injectables then gave up with no success. I got pregnant with the two I misscarried in 02 on my on and the one this year. I am now on metformin and clomid. The doctor says he wants me to get pregnant again fast. Why I do not know. Which that would be fine with me. He did say he would stitch me at 12 weeks. I stayed on progestrone until week 12. I have read that some women get shots of it starting week 16. Do you know anything about this?

Well I read your posting on another thread and saw that you do have PCOS. Did you take any meds before or during pregnancy for this. I have been taking low dose asprin, 500mg metformin and this month 50 mg clomid. I did ovulate just too early to know if I'm preg or not. The meds I am on I started taking after my m/s in May.

Yes, I have PCOS and I did take progesterone during the first trimester of my pregnancy. I had been on metformin, but had begun low carbing and controlled my diabetes and PCOS with that. I believe that made the big difference for me in being able to get pregnant and maintain the pregnancy.
I suspect, but have not found any research on it, the progesterone may be a factor in IC, as well. There seems to be a significant number of women with PCOS who have IC. When I joined Soul Cysters I was absolutely shocked by how many people had lost babies due to iC because I was under the impression that it was extremely rare. I began researching everything. I had to find some answers. I'm still working on it. Now, I personally do not believe IC is that rare. I also think that it is much more common than statistic reflect because of how difficult it can be to diagnose.
As for a subsequent pregnancy, the most important thing for you is going to be getting a preventative cerclage. The success rates are really high with preventative cerclages.

Tami, my progesterone was extremely low in both of my pregnancies. The 17P shots starting at 16 weeks are used to prevent Preterm labor. If your doc's not 100% sure of the cause of your loss, ask for them!
As far as which came first, dilation or contractions...anyone's guess in some situations. I was "fortunate" enough that my dilation was noticed before my contractions began. That gave me a classic diagnosis of IC...a lot of women aren't seen until contractions begin, and then they're misdiagnosed as Preterm labor.
Again, if you're not 100% sure, get the progesterone shots!

My doctor says that it was IC but I have never really discussed with him very much about the contractions being my first warning sign. I did take progesterone up until week 12 but I am going to talk to him about the other. When I was 14 weeks my cervix was short 2.8 the doctor told me that it was short but he really wasn't concerned with it. Is that normal? Thanks to the both of you for answering my questions... Tami

Contractions are often a persons first warning sign b/c you begin dilating without major contractions, but you will go into labor. This is the reason IC is so difficult to diagnose. You said you lost your mucus plug before contractions began. That was really your first warning sign. You just didn't know what it was. It was my first warning sign, too, but I didn't have a clue. The fact that you were 2.8 at 14 weeks tells the story, though. Your cervix should not have been that short. In my opinion, you should have received a preventative cerclage that day.
